Mary Tyler Moore, the woman the world came to know and love on the popular '70s series, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, has died at 80. Robert Levine." "A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile."
Moore had reportedly been on a respirator for more than a week before her death; earlier this morning reports listed her a being in "grave condition." The actress was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was just 33 and in 2011 she underwent elective surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. According to Wikpedia, "in 2014 friends reported that she has heart and kidney problems and is nearly blind." That's not the Moore that will be remembered by millions today, however. The six-time Emmy winner brought laughs to the public for years, first as part of The Dick Van Dyke Show and then on her own Mary Tyler Moore Show, followed by notable film roles in Thoroughly Modern Millie and Ordinary People, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She also received a special Tony Award for her performance in Whose Life Is It Anyway? on Broadway. As part of her diabetes activism, Moore released the memoir, Growing Up Again: Life, Loves, and Oh Yeah, Diabetes, in 2009. Her first memoir, After All, which discussed her life as a recovering alcoholic, was published in 1995. Moore's only son, Richard, died at the age of 24 in 1980 from of an accidental gunshot to the head while handling a sawed off shotgun. She was married a total of three times, the last to Dr. Robert Levine  on November 23, 1983.
